ABOUT
BIOGRAPHY
Matthew Gett is a painter whose dynamic practice unfolds across acrylics, inks, and oils on both wood-frame panels and stretched canvas. Born in Sydney in 1985, he first engaged with art during his schooling years and later honed his craft through formal study at college. His work draws upon a rich tapestry of global experiences — having lived in Australia, the U.S. Mid-West and Belgium — before settling in Manchester, United Kingdom. This international journey has deeply informed his visual sensibility, lending it both breadth and depth.
In his paintings, Gett navigates an interplay between geometric abstraction and more classical portraiture. His compositions have been described as combining the force of gravity with the spirit of Pop Art — a vivid, vibrant collision of structure and color. Known for his use of bright, bold palettes and striking geometric forms, he transforms spiritual and cultural icons into contemporary visions, bridging the timeless and the immediate. Through this blend of genres, he invites the viewer into a world that is at once familiar and radically re-imagined.
Between 2012 and 2014, Gett was represented by the Gobert Gallery, where he delivered two solo exhibitions and participated in multiple group shows. From early on he has been active in the art-competition circuit: shortlisted or recognised at events such as the Warringah Art Prize (2010), the Hornsby Art Prize (2012), Camden Art Prize (2018), and securing a semi-finalist position in “The Art Lounge” magazine’s “In the Wild” competition. These accolades underscore his commitment to pushing boundaries and engaging audiences through bold, contemporary art.
